Tall Thistle lives up to its name, growing up to seven feet in height. The species name, altissimum, means “the tallest.” It is a biennial with a tap root, not a rhizomatous root like the agressive, non-native Canada thistle - Cirsium arvense. As a biennial it reaches flowering stage in year 2 before dying off. It is a active self-seeder though, so the cycle will continue as long as it sets seed. Plant seed or plants in the fall to take full advantage of this biennial cycle.

Cirsium altissimum can be planted in a variety of habitats, including wooded areas, savannas, swamps, meadows, tallgrass prairies, and in a variety of disturbance levels. Tall Thistle prefers full sun with little shade and a mesic (medium) moisture soil. The flowers of are typically purple or pink, 1-2 inches in diameter. These flowers attract a wide variety of pollinators, including bumblebees, long-horned bees, swallowtail butterflies, many beetles and caterpillars. The seeds of Cirsium species are favorites of many bird species, such as goldfinches, sparrows, and indigo buntings. Do not fret about the spines of Tall Thistle. Unlike some of its relatives, the plant can be comfortably touched by bare fingers and skin.
