Early Meadow Rue showcases precocious little flowers in early spring; the broccoli-like clusters of buds burst open before or just as the first batch of foliage begins to unfurl.  This species is dioecious, with each individual plant growing as either male or female, with distinguishing features becoming evident as the blossoms develop.  The male flowers nod and the stamens dangle like tassels, glinting in light green and golden hues.  Female flowers tend to maintain a more upright posture and showcase muted mauves and pale pistachio colors.  Despite these charming, petite blooms, Early Meadow Rue is really renowned for its fine, attractive foliage.  The gently lobed leaves are held aloft on slim, ruddy stems, creating a lacey mound throughout the growing season that provides simple but unique interest.

Thalictrum dioicum grows best in a woodland setting, flourishing in dappled shade and rich, moisture-retaining soils.  It makes a great companion plant for spring ephemerals, since the bloom periods often coincide - and as the ephemerals go dormant, their empty spots are filled by the Early Meadow Rue foliage.  It is best to have several specimens local to each other, since seed production is dependent on wind pollination.  This species has rhizomatous roots, so a single plant will spread, but very slowly.  This species is considered deer resistant.

*This species may be difficult and/or slow to germinate and grow to maturity.  Please note the germination code. Seed of this species is kept under refrigeration (33-38 F) in our warehouse. The days in transit to you in colder or warmer conditions won’t harm the seed, but it should be put back in refrigeration until you are ready to plant or apply pre-sowing treatment.
