Sium suave or ‘water parsnip’ is a semi-aquatic wildflower that forms clusters of white flowers that go on to produce small, ribbed oval fruits. Water Parsnip loves wet soils, even including standing water. Water Parsnip enjoys full sun to part shade. This plant is a member of the carrot family and actually grows natively everywhere in North America. It prefers swamps, wet meadows, wet woodlands, streams/ponds, roadside ditches and muddy shores.

Water Parsnip can grow to a staggering 6 feet tall and boasts a stout hollow central stalk. Leaves form differently based on certain conditions. On moist ground, this forb forms a rosete of basal leaves that measure around 1.5 inches across. In shallow water, it forms a cluster of aquatic or semi-aquatic leaves that vary in length. Fully aquatic leaves are double pinnate or double pinnatifid with filiform leaflets that are pale green. Semi-aquatic leaves are primarily odd-pinnate with linear or linear-lanceolate leaflets. These deep green compound leaves are 4-10 inches long. Tiny white flowers bloom July-September in domed umbels that get about 2-3 inches wide. Flowers are followed by small, ribbed oval fruits. The flowers attract many different native bees such as, Halictid bees, masked bees, and cuckoo wasps. Water Parsnip attracts many other insects, including the larval stage of the Black Swallowtail butterfly. Unlike other species in the carrot family, the foliage is not regarded as toxic to mammalian herbivores.

There are no major pests or diseases that affect sium suave. People tend to grow them for filler in water gardens, pond margines, and offshore foliage.
