Riddell’s Goldenrod produces mounded clusters of lemon-yellow flowers from August through October.  As the plant blossoms, the leaves will often wither away, drawing attention to the bobbing yellow buds atop naked stems; these turn a ruddy red as the coolness of autumn creeps in and transforms the flowers into tufted, oatmeal-colored seedheads. The foliage is quite distinct: the midvein is very pronounced, with the edges on either side folding upwards.  Leaves layer over each other, creating a beautiful “braided” effect as they ascend the stem.  The long, narrow foliage arcs gracefully away from the center.  These foliage factors are unique to Riddell’s Goldenrod.

Oligoneuron riddellii requires full sunlight.  It performs best when its roots remain damp, but will adjust to medium moisture levels; inadequate water supplies will stunt this Goldenrod, limiting its growth to as short as 1 foot.  Supplemental watering may be necessary in these conditions.  This plant tolerates and may even prefer calcareous sites with gritty soil and alkalinity levels of pH 7 or 8.  The fibrous roots can produce rhizomes, supplementing the population and slowly giving the plant community a fuller appearance.  Riddell’s Goldenrod can hybridize with other members of the Oligoneuron family if they are planted in close proximity to one another.

This plant attracts honey bees, bumblebees, and a plethora of other native bees.  Many species of moth caterpillars will feed on the leaves, drawing insectivorous birds to dine in the area and most avian parents use the soft larvae as “carry out” to feed their chicks.  Riddell’s Goldenrod is also a songbird magnet; the seed brings in Goldfinches, native Sparrows, Indigo Buntings, Slate-colored Juncos, and many more!
