Rosa blanda, Early Wild Rose, is native to the Northeast United States and Upper Midwest. This perennial shrub prefers full to partial sun, and medium to dry soils. In its native range, it can often be found in areas with high disturbance, such as fence rows, woodland edges, thickets, and prairies. Rosa blanda, like other Rosa species, are somewhat aggressive and spread via root suckers. They may be less suitable for small landscapes.

Also known as the “Smooth Rose” because its new growth is thornless, Rosa blanda blooms in June and July. Its five-petaled, pale pink flowers attract a multitude of pollinators, especially bees. The large, red rose hips in the fall create great pops of color and are favorites of many herbivores.

Be careful when transplanting or pruning Rosa blanda. It does have thorns on older, woody growth!

*This species (in seed) may be difficult and/or slow to germinate and grow to maturity.  Please note the germination code.
