We grouped this kit by color for pleasing symmetry, with a heart of purple and a subtle background provided by delicate sedges.

5 Questions asked on Rain Garden Kit for Pollinators

Hi there, I am interested in using a planting tray to plant a (roughly) 6x12' rain garden in what I would call partial sun. The natural soil on the site is sandy, pretty dry and well-drained, but it is a low spot that gets innundated irregularly with rains. It almost always fully drains within 24-48 hours of filling up. Given the 'moist' soil requirement, would this mix be appropriate, or should I consider mixing and matching? Thanks!
Hi Hayley. Yes, I think this Garden Kit would be perfect for this spot. The natives in this kit prefer a medium-wet soil but will also thrive in medium soils like you have.
Are many of the plants in this kit relatively deer resistant?
Yes, we would consider most of the species deer resistant. Keep in mind, nothing is ever deer proof! Each deer population is unique and might browse on different plants in different areas.
I was curious how big (size in inches) the tray is you would ship to my house?
Hi Rebecca, Great question! The potted tray is 12x21x5" and the box that we ship it in is 12x21x10".
Hi, Do you have a garden kit that would thrive in an area that ends up wet for extended periods of time due to rain-runoff from my neighbors property. The natural soil is clay and has full southern exposure. When it fills up it can take days to dry-up. Thank you!
Look no further, Eddie! The Rain Garden Kit for Pollinators sounds like the perfect garden for your site. These species will thrive in the full sun and will appreciate the periodically wet, moisture-retaining clay soil.
Hi-I have a swale about 2 X 75 ft. Underneath is clay soil. Would a rain garden be good for this? I'm not sure how to arrange the plants. If not, can you suggest something more suitable? Thank you
Hi Don. Is this swale a municipality installation with drainage/maintenance requirements? Or is it a naturally occurring or otherwise unstructured swale? If you do not need to be concerned about root systems clogging any pipes, the species in the Rain Garden Kit may work well for this site. Another consideration is how steep the slope is and whether the swale channels seasonal floods, especially if that results in swift currents. This factor could affect installation and plant placement. There are lots of variables about this question; what a wonderful opportunity, though! Please feel free to contact us to discuss your site in further detail.

Potted Plants:

Trays (38 plants) leave our Midwest greenhouse based on species readiness (well-rooted for transit) and based on order date; shipping begins early-May and goes into June. Each of the 38 plant cells are 2” wide at top x 5” deep; ideal for deep-rooted natives. Full-color tags and planting instructions/care are included with each order.

For the Garden Kit trays, we may need to substitute appropriate species without notice due to shortages later in the season or unforeseen greenhouse failures.

Shipping & Handling Charges:
For Potted Plant orders $50.00 and under: $7.50
For Potted Plant orders over $50.00: add 15% of the total plant cost.

We ship potted trays with UPS, and SpeeDee in the Midwest, so we must have a street address. Long-distance shipments (to the East Coast and West) taking 3 or more days are only shipped on Mondays to prevent plants from drying out over the weekend. If you are ordering during the shipping season, please allow at least one week for us to process your order.

Orders ship only when all species in the tray are transit-hardy, and then by order date, typically beginning early May and going into June. Potted plants are seedlings started the previous winter and growth is weather-dependant. Plants must be large and well-rooted enough to stay in their cells during shipment. Our greenhouses are located in the Upper Midwest, and due to the challenges of getting all the species in the Mix & Match and Pre-Designed Garden Kits transit-ready at the same time, we typically can't ship before early May. Earlier shipment requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*We are unable to ship potted or bare root plants outside the contiguous US or to California due to government regulations.
