Bare Root Plants
Out of Stock

American Burnet produces majestic white tufts; in solitary plants, the blooms look like bottlebrushes.  But en masse?  The fragile, drooping filaments sway and ripple in the wind, looking like the fluffy fur coat of some mystical creature!  We can’t decide if these could be a swatch from regal Faldur in The NeverEnding Story, loyal Appa from Avatar: The Last Airbender, or even a pale version of Mr. Snuffaluffagus of Sesame Street fame (especially when the flowerheads bend and crook like his trunk!).  The bright green vegetation is most prominent at the base of the plant, with the serrated, oval leaves becoming sparse as they ascend the stem.  The color and interest in fall is unsurpassed: rich carnelian and amber foliage anchor the pearly plumes, which often flower until the end of October.

A typical wetland plant, Sanguisorba canadensis enjoys a sunny site and keeping its roots damp.  It is commonly found near marshy areas, along riverbanks, wet meadows, and floodplains.  In ideal conditions, this species often grows beyond 5 feet tall; the height range spans anywhere from 2’ to 6’.  The rhizomatous roots are rather woody and can produce offsets to increase the population.

American Burnet produces a large amount of pollen throughout the late fall season, supplying pollinators the food source they need to successfully overwinter.  The plants we have on-site are absolutely abuzz with all manner of bees (including honeybees) in the autumn months.

This underappreciated species is native to much of the northeastern and northwestern coasts of North America.  Due to habitat loss, American Burnet is listed as threatened or endangered throughout much of its native range.
