Pale-spiked Lobelia is one of the more subtle and understated of the Lobelias; the small, tubular flowers warrant a closer look.  Showcasing white, light blue, or faintly lavender blooms, it is a beauty to witness as a delicate detail in mixed plantings.  It blossoms early in the season, making it a sweet flower to bridge the spring and summer seasons.  After that, it tends to blend in amongst the taller forbs and grasses

Lobelia spicata is native to prairies, savannas, and open woodlands.  Ideal conditions range from medium-wet to medium-dry soils and full or partial sun.  Pale-Spiked Lobelia thrives when sited near neighborly native plants and grasses, since it has a tendency to flop over when not properly supported.  The seeds produced are so tiny that they can be carried on the wind; because of their dimunitive size, these seeds need to be surface sown in order to germinate.  Once sprouted, the young seedlings require consistent moisture to successfully reach maturity.

The dainty flowers attract similarly petite pollinators, such as minor, mason, and sweat bees - but they may also attract hummingbirds like other native Lobelias. A film on the leaves and stems of this plant make it unpalatable to mammals.
