Houstonia longifolia is an herbaceous perennial wildflower that only grows to about 6”. It prefers full to partial sun, drier conditions, and can tolerate poor quality soils. Because of its height, it will not do well with competition from taller or aggressive vegetation. Houstonia longifolia is found in dry gravel prairies, hill prairies, rocky glades, and thinly wooded bluffs.

The small flowers are pollinated by small bees such as Halictid bees, masked bees, mason bees, and others. Bloom colors can vary from pale pink and blue to white. The foliage is rarely eaten by rabbits and other small mammals.
