Stiff Gentian is a biennial; it grows vegetatively during the first year and completes its life cycle during the second, but will re-seed.  It can also behave as an annual.   It is a wonderful, short and versatile plant to try in a small home landscape.  Also called Agueweed, it can bloom into October, giving the garden much-needed late season color.  The tube-shaped flower is a favorite of Bumblebees; they need natives like this before their winter hibernation.

Clusters of small flowers ranging from a single or up to 7, are light purple to shades of blue and even with yellow tints, bloom on the top of the plant.  It has a branching habit, and the strong central stem that supports the plant has a reddish tint.  Smooth leaves clasp the stem and have attractive parallel veins. They also take on tints of red.  It can grow in part shade to full sun in medium-moist clay to dry and even rocky or sandy conditions.

Stiff Gentian was previously classified Gentiana quinquefolia with all other Gentians, but Gentianella is now given to the dwarf Gentians.
