Echinacea is not the only genus to fall under the Coneflower category; this collage also includes Rudbeckia species to extend the bloom-color spectrum and to keep the extravagant flower exhibition going from spring through fall. Beyond the rayed focal points, this shortgrass seed mix boasts an incredible amount of diversity; with over 80 species in the roster, the Echinacea Extravaganza is second only to our Grand Diversity seed mix!

The flowers and roots of Echinacea have been widely used for medicinal purposes and teas; you may have even taken some the last time you had a cold or the flu!. Aside from boosting immunity and easing sore throats, Echinacea species support an amazing array of wildlife! Native bees, beneficial wasps, butterflies, and moths sup the nectar. Several songbirds, particularly goldfinches, consume the seeds - plucking their meal from the spikey seedheads.

Seed collectors take note: Echinacea species can cross-pollinate and hybridize with one another, which may result in a separate variety. This is a natural process and happens in the wild, but harvesters should be aware that Echinacea seeds may not be true-to-type once this native planting is established.

Sow the Echinacea Extravaganza Seed Mix in full sun and moderate to dry soil for best blossoms.

How tall can we expect this mix to get?

Hi Tom. Great question! Our shortgrass seed mixes were designed to emulate what was once a drier, and therefore shorter, natural prairie or meadow. The grasses in the mix (Little Blue and Side-oats being the main ones) will top out, when mature, and at the end of summer, around 3 feet, with the flowers of a couple species topping out at 5 feet, again when mature, and in full bloom. The height of any prairie planting will also be dependent on the conditions it’s planted in; mixes grown in drier conditions will be shorter than those in richer soils. Surrounding competition, and maturity of the plants will also play a role.

When calculating the seeding rate I assume you have accounted for the germination rates of the species in the mix but do you account for losses due to wildlife? Seeding in mid October with the expectation of germination 6 months later is a long period for the critters to find the seed.

Grant, we do account for the fact that not every seed will germinate and that not every seed will make it through the winter due to predation. Our mixes are almost always made up with over 100 seeds per square foot which is a liberal amount compared to many other mixes you can purchase on the market.

We planted this Echinacea shortgrass on May 12, 2023. We live on the Lake Superior shore so weather has been cool. So far the plants that I've identified that are coming up are not in the components list. How long does the mix take to germinate?

Hi Sue. Most native flower species need a overwintering experience in order to germinate; expect to see a whole lot more sprouts next spring! The cover crop (if applicable), grass species, and possibly the Black-eyed Susans are most likely to germinate this season. Be sure to keep the area mowed as needed throughout this first growing season; it helps mitigate the weeds.

Native plant communities provide the inspiration for our seed-mix designs. All our mixes feature high seeding rates and a diverse balance of native species, which, when mature, will provide blossoms throughout the year. No matter what you want from a seed mix, you will need to make sure it fits the soil-moisture holding capacity and sun conditions of your site.

E stablishment of the diverse native-plant communities represented in our seed mixes can take three to five years. The most critical process before planting is preparing the site by removing unwanted species and working to deplete the soil’s weed seed bank. Shipping Season

SEED, TOOLS and BOOKS are sent year-round. Most orders ship within 1-3 business days.

BARE ROOT PLANTS are shipped during optimal transplanting time: Spring (April-May) and Fall (Oct). Some ephemeral species are also available for summer shipping. Since our plants are field-grown, Nature sets the schedule each year as to when our season will begin and end. We fill all orders, on a first-come, first-serve basis, to the best of our ability depending on weather conditions beyond our control.

POTTED PLANTS (Trays of 32/38/50 plugs and 3-packs) typically begin shipping early May and go into June; shipping time is heavily dependent on all the species in your order being well-rooted. If winter-spring greenhouse growing conditions are favorable and all species are well-rooted at once, then we ship by order date (first come, first serve). We are a Midwest greenhouse, and due to the challenges of getting all the species in the Mix & Match and Pre-Designed Garden Kits transit-ready at the same time, we typically can't ship before early May. Earlier shipment requests will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

*We are unable to ship PLANTS (bare root or potted) outside the contiguous US or to CALIFORNIA due to regulations.

Delivery

We ship using USPS, UPS and Spee Dee. UPS and Spee Dee are often used for expediting plant orders; they will not deliver to Post Office Box numbers, so please also include your street address if ordering plants. We send tracking numbers to your email address so please include it when you order.
