Amethyst Shooting Star, or Jeweled Shooting Star, produces a dramatic cluster of five parted, purple to pink colored blossoms. Fused petals face downward to produce a tube, ringed with maroon, yellow and white. Unlike its relative Dodecatheon meadia (Midland Shooting Star), Dodecatheon amethystinum survives in a very limited native range with populations confined to the steep limestone bluffs of the upper mid-west Driftless region, in addition to a small area of the Appalachians. Seeing Amethyst Shooting Star in the wild is rare and the small, fragmented wild populations are at an increased risk of becoming endangered, so it is important that we treasure this species, and the habitats it naturally exists in, so future generations can enjoy its beauty.

Growing 4-18" tall, Amethyst Shooting Star does well in medium soil types with nearly full shade to full sun and has a wonderful fragrance when in full bloom.
