Common Cattail Sedge actively grows during the spring and fall when soil temperatures are cool.  It can be found in a habitat such as a floodplain forest or swamp.   It prefers partial shade to full shade, and moist to wet conditions. Carex typhina is a rare plant in Minnesota, staying near floodplain forests of the Mississippi.  The most distinguishable traits of the Cattail Sedge is its clump-forming habit, and spikes that are a cylindrical shape, reminiscent of a miniature cattail, and very attractive.  The plant turns a rich brown and keeps its shape all winter.  It would make an excellent addition to a shaded rain garden.
