Also known as the Broom Sedge, from a Latin word menaing 'broom-like', Carex scoparia is a clumping sedge and a cool season grass, growing most actively during the spring and fall when soil temperatures are cool. The plant is a perennial and does well in sites with ample sunlight with moist soil. It has a preference for wet sandy and mucky soils such as in marshes, floodplains, wet pastures, and even roadside ditches.

This wetland sedge gives many different animal species food and nesting material. Waterfowl, songbirds, small rodents and turtles all eat the seeds. Carex scoparia is also a host to different caterpillar species of moths and skippers.
